St. Peter's Church

One of the most festive running events in North Florida is returning to Fernandina Beach THIS MORNING! It’s the annual Pirates on the Run 5K/10K, featuring a free pancake breakfast for registered runners and walkers, courses that include cross-country routes through the Egan's Creek Greenway, and lots and lots of pirates!

The Ned Tyson Memorial Pirates on the Run 5K/10K will be Saturday, Feb. 18, at 8:30 a.m., with the start and finish lines at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 801 Atlantic Ave.

Egans Creek

Both race courses run through Fernandina's streets and onto the Egan's Creek Greenway where runners will enjoy beautiful views of nature and wildlife through a grass cross-country route. (The Greenway nature trail is hard-packed, but portions will be muddy if there's been rain.) More about the Greenway

Members of the Fernandina Pirates Club in full regalia will be on the course to cheer the runners and walkers, and handing out Mardi Gras beads to finishers!

Scoring for the 5K and 10K races will be done with timing. You must wear a chip on your shoe to be timed! UPDATE: This year we will be using disposable chips, so you won't have to return them after the race. You will pick up your chip at the same time you get your race packet.

Walkers are welcome and are encouraged to enter the 5K. Walkers also can wear a chip if you'd like your time recorded. Walkers, please stay on the sidewalk as much as possible.

NO STROLLERS, dogs or headphones in the 5K/10K. (No kids’ fun runs this year.) The Greenway surface is especially non-conducive to strollers, so please don't use them. Be aware that there will be traffic on the course, except in the Greenway. (The 10K Greenway course will cross a road with traffic, out-and-back.)

Please don't switch from the 10K to the 5K, or vice versa, without telling us before the race at the registration tables so we can assign you a new number. If you switch distances without telling us at registration, your results will be listed in the wrong race, which will also make other runners' rankings wrong.

The event is run and walked in memory of Ned Tyson, who came up with the idea for the race in 2004 and helped nurture it for its first three years. The Amelia Island Runners club assumed management of the event in 2007, and it quickly became one of the community's most popular races.
