2012 Pirates on the Run -- Race Routes
Saturday, Feb. 18, 2012

The 2012 Pirates on the Run 5K and 10K will feature the same scenic routes that proved so popular last year. Both will have a cross-country segment through the Egan's Creek Greenway. Here is a map of the 5K course (click to enlarge) and a map of the 10K course.

Both the 5K and 10K will start together at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 801 Atlantic Avenue in Fernandina Beach. Runners will hear race instructions and the National Anthem while gathered next to the church on North 9th St., then will move into Atlantic Avenue, where the race will begin at 8:30 a.m. Walkers are asked to stay on the sidewalks as much as possible -- almost all of the route (excluding the Greenway segment) will have sidewalks. It's important to note that animals, headphones, and strollers will not be allowed on the route -- the Greenway segment especially is not conducive to strollers.

Runners will head eastbound on Atlantic Avenue to Citrona Drive, then turn right on Citrona and take a left at Beech Street to enter the Greenway. Please be careful of your footing, this is a cross-country course!

5K runners will turn around at the turnaround point -- a volunteer will be there to alert you -- while 10K runners keep going, crossing Jasmine Street and entering the south Greenway until they reach the turnaround point.

5K and 10K runners will exit the Greenway at the Recreation Center exit, and will run toward Atlantic Avenue along the west side of the Recreation Center. When you reach Atlantic Avenue, turn left into the runners' lane (which will be marked by cones) on the south side of Atlantic Avenue. Follow Atlantic all the way back to the Episcopal Church. You will turn right to cross Atlantic at Ninth Street, and finish on Ninth Street next to the church, in the area where runners and walkers got their pre-race instructions.

Please be aware that traffic will be on the course, except for the Greenway segment. Runners, please DO NOT attempt to use the sidewalks -- sidewalks near the start/finish area are not conducive to running, and walkers will be using the sidewalks.
