Survivors' Tent

Thousands of runners and walkers enjoyed perfect weather Saturday, Oct. 20 for what is now Jacksonville’s biggest 5K, the Susan G. Komen North Florida Race for the Cure.

More than 1,600 runners completed the 5K race against breast cancer, followed by a non-timed 5K/2K in which thousands more took part. Perhaps most important, the event exceeded its $100,000 fund-raising goal.

At the "Survivors' Tent" runners could get special race bibs to honor family members and friends touched by breast cancer.

Hundreds of runners and walkers wore the "In Celebration Of" or "In Memoriam" bibs on the back of their T-shirts.

Amelia Island Runners were out in force to support the cause and revel in the return (finally!) of cool racing weather along a new course that began with a loop around the football stadium.

Three of our members won first-place age group awards – Frank Frazier, Rosa Haslip and Al Saffer.

Pre-Race Calisthenics   Lucy and Ann   Rosa and Bill
Runners and walkers were led in group calisthenics before the race.

Lucy Athey and Ann Reamy before the 5K start. Ann finished third in her age group, while Lucy walked with her daughter, a 2-year survivor, and son-in-law. Even though it was a walk, faithful racer Lucy wore her chip!

Rosa Haslip and Bill Pennington before the start; Rosa won her age-group and Bill finished fourth in his.

Post-race crowds enjoying such goodies as Starbucks Coffee and Panera Bagels shaped like ribbons.
Congratulations to all of our runners and walkers, and to the North Florida Affiliate of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for a successful and inspiring event.
