Another warm, humid morning greeted the athletes for the second Jax Sprint Triathlon of 2010, along with a choppier surf than last time. Still, a larger field than for the first event on June 19 was on hand to compete. We also had an increase in the number of Amelia Island Runners who did the 3-mile run, 10-mile bike and quarter-mile swim. Congratulations to all of our finishers -- your pictures are below, along with age-group results for finishers who received awards. (If we missed you, please let us know!) Here are the official race results. The third and final event in the series will be Aug. 7 at Main Beach Park in Fernandina Beach. Saturday's event was dedicated to the memory of Nikki Baird Buchholz, who suffered a seizure during the bike portion of the first sprint tri and died later in a hospital. Nikki's family and friends are in the process of creating a nonprofit organization to raise awareness of hyperthermia among athletes and first responders. Here's a report on their efforts. |
