2008 Turkey Trot 5K and 1 Mile Kids' Run
Amelia Island Plantation - November 27, 2008

For runners on Amelia Island who prefer something closer to home than the half-marathon, there’s an increasingly popular option. The Amelia Island Plantation’s annual Turkey Trot 5K and children’s run drew a field of more than 300 people, a big increase over last year.
“It went really well. We were pleasantly surprised by the turnout,” said race director Cori McKeefery. “We had a lot of repeat runners from last year, and a big clan from Pennsylvania signed up, 12 people. And it was a beautiful, frozen day!”
The 5K is untimed, although runners do have benefit of the Amelia Island Runners race clock, and age-group winners receive prizes. AIR volunteers Matthew Altman and Bruce Dunham were in charge of the race scoring and “they were awesome,” Cori said.
The event began as an informal holiday run for Plantation residents and guests, and a few years ago it was opened to the public. With the 5K becoming so popular, Cori says that the organizers want to make it a timed race next year and go three-deep with age group awards.
Proceeds will benefit the Nassau Humane Society.
