It's here -- the Turtle Trot 5K/10K, walk and kids' runs on Labor Day weekend! You can sign up this morning from 6 to 7 a.m. at the Atlantic Recreation Center. And here's great news -- you'll be guaranteed a t-shirt if you sign up this morning!

Runners in this year’s Turtle Trot will get a 7:30 a.m. start to help beat the late-summer heat. Also, runners will be able to use the Atlantic Recreation Center's shower facilities after the race for free! (Bring your own towels!) And after a refreshing shower, you can enjoy the day on Amelia Island, including free admission to Fort Clinch State Park with your race bib. You could even win a night's stay at an Amelia Island hotel!

The Turtle Trot is presented annually on Labor Day weekend by the Amelia Island Runners club. The event features professional race timing with ChampionChips. Proceeds benefit Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch, sea turtle patrols inside Fort Clinch State Park, and the club's youth running programs.

"This year's Turtle Trot will truly be a holiday weekend event for the whole family, especially for our out-of-town visitors," said John McBrearty of Amelia Island Runners. "You can do the race, possibly win a door prize or a race award, take a shower, and then visit the Fort Clinch park and pier, beach, nature trails and picnic area, and enjoy the day at the park and in Fernandina Beach."

Runners and walkers will get free admission to Fort Clinch State Park after the event on race day by presenting their Turtle Trot race bibs at the guard station. (Admission to the fort itself will still be $2.)

The race features professional scoring, using electronic chip-timing. The 5K, 10K and 1.5-mile noncompetitive walk will start and finish at the Atlantic Avenue Recreation Center, with the last half of the 10K running through beautiful (and shaded!) Ft. Clinch State Park. The 1.5-mile walk starts behind the runners at 7:35 a.m. and is untimed. If you're a walker and would like your time to be recorded, you can enter the 5K and wear a ChampionChip on your shoe. Here's the location of the Atlantic Rec Center.

The 5K/10K races begin together in front of the Atlantic Rec Center. Runners head west to North 14th Street and turn right (north) onto 14th St. 5K runners turn around at the halfway point and return to the Rec Center -- Here's a 5K course map. 10K runners keep going on 14th Street and enter the back entrance of Fort Clinch State Park, running through the park to return to the Rec Center -- Here's a 10K course map. Both races will finish on Jeam Lafitte Blvd. directly east of the Rec Center parking lot. The courses are USATF certified: 5K, FL08001GAN; 10K, FL08002GAN. Be aware, traffic will be on the courses. Here's a look back at last year's event, including race results and photos.

Half-mile and one-mile fun runs for children 10 and younger will begin at 9 a.m. The entry fee is $10. All preregistered kids will get a T-shirt, with race-day shirts available while supplies last, and all finishers receive a ribbon. Parents are encouraged to run with their children for free - just fill out a registration form.

An awards ceremony will follow the races, along with refreshments and drawings for door prizes. All 5K/10K runners and walkers will be eligible for the drawings, and must be present to win. The following 5K/10K race awards will be presented to the top male and female finishers in the 5K and 10K: Overall, Masters (age 40+) and Grandmasters (50+), and three-deep age group awards: 3-10, 11-13, 14-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75+.

Door prizes to be given away are overnight stays at two of Amelia Island's finest hotels, the Hampton Inn Amelia Island at Fernandina Beach on Sadler Road and the Residence Inn Amelia Island. You must be present to win.

Atlantic Ave. Recreation CenterA popular feature is returning this year – original T-shirt artwork by Fernandina Beach artist and sea turtle volunteer Sandra Baker-Hinton. She created this artwork specifically as the image for the 2010 Turtle Trot T-shirts -- here's the story!

The artist will be at the Turtle Trot post-race events this morning and will be happy to autograph your Turtle Trot t-shirt (assuming you didn't wear it in the run!)

The registration fee for the 5K, 10K and 1.5-mile noncompetitive walk is $25 for everyone. You can download an entry form here and take it to the race this morning, or fill one out there. NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER 7:00 A.M.

Please be advised that headphones, animals, bicycles and strollers are not allowed on the 5K/10K course. No refunds, duplicate awards or walk awards.

Preregistered runners and walkers can pick up their packets at the Atlantic Rec Center this morning starting at 6 a.m. Chips will not be in the packets, they must be picked up separately at the Rec today starting at 6 a.m.

We hope you'll join us this morning for the 2010 edition of the Turtle Trot!
