2008 Carrabba's Summer Beach Run

A pair of tropical storms couldn’t douse the annual beach party that is the Carrabba’s Summer Beach Run.

The event had its 44th running at Jacksonville Beach on the evening of Sept. 6, delayed two weeks earlier by Tropical Storm Fay and skirted the day before by Hanna.

While hundreds of runners, walkers, spectators and volunteers were on hand for the festivities, they paused to remember one who was absent – John TenBroeck, a founder of JTC Running, the race’s organizer. He died Sept. 5 of cancer at age 67.

It was the first time in many years that “Dr. John” wasn’t present, and his familiar voice announcing runners’ finishes will be very much missed, said 1st Place Sports owner Doug Alred. Before the firing of the starting cannon – which had been John’s job at countless Jacksonville races through the years – Doug led the group in a 90-second tribute, punctuated by strains of Amazing Grace from a lone bagpipe.

“John would want you to have a good time,” Doug told the runners, and they obliged as the race got under way in humid conditions with a breeze from the south. Overall winners were Justin Jacobs, 25, in 28:04 and Sopagna Eap, 27, in 30:31, while John Metzgar, 45, 30:42, and Kim Scurti, 40, 34:50, led the masters division. Among the top five men’s and women’s finishers were two runners who also were at or near the top in AIR’s Turtle Trot 10K Aug. 30, Britta Fortson and Japeth Koech.

The field of 1,163 finishers in the five-miler included a good turnout of AIR members, as usual for the venerable Summer Beach Run. The party also included a one-mile run, live music, and food from Carrabba’s Italian Grill.

Here’s a rundown of AIR finishers, including age-group award winners. Congratulations to all of our finishers! And as always, if we missed you, please send us an email and we’ll add you to the list!
