February 26, 2010

As the Winter Olympics were winding down in Vancouver, the Special Olympics staged a successful return to Nassau County on Feb. 26.

Almost 200 participants from around the county took part in the 2010 Special Olympics at the Fernandina Beach High School track. Amelia Island Runners has been proud to be affiliated with the program for the last several years, and AIR’s founder, John McBrearty, was instrumental in its return. John volunteered to serve as county coordinator for Special Olympics Nassau and spearheaded the local program’s revival.

Atlhetes competed in several running and walking events, as well as the shot put, running long jump, standing long jump and pentathlon, and wheelchair events. Divisioning was done by gender, age and ability as recommended by Special Olympics Florida.

At the conclusion of the event McBrearty said, ""Special Olympics is like Amelia Island Runners - when you get so many good people working together it has to turn out well."
