Our 2010 summer running camp is history, and we want to thank and congratulate all of our "graduates"! This was the fifth year of our camp, which is led by AIR volunteer Bill Beaumont, cross country coach at St. Michael's Academy. It's one of our running club's top projects of the year, and it's designed to help aspiring and experienced runners of all ages step up to the "next level," and have fun along the way.

In Monday's first session, Coach Bill talked about mental preparation for running. Most important is having a goal -- it gets you motivated to run even on days when you'd rather not. The goal needs to be challenging yet realistic -- anything from being able to run around the block, to performing at your peak abilities in races. The great thing is, YOU decide what your goal is, and YOU can make it a success! Here's a recap of Day 1.

On Tuesday, Coach Bill talked about physical preparation – nutrition, hydration, equipment, warming up, and stretching. Here's a recap of Day 2.

On Wednesday, we videotaped each runner so everyone could see their gait and running form, and Coach Bill could suggest changes to make their running more efficient. He also discussed training, easy runs, tempo runs, intervals and repetitions, and much more. Here's the Day 3 recap.

Our special guest speaker on Thursday was a former U.S. marathon record-holder. Jerry Lawson broke the U.S. marathon record in 1997 with a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes and 35 seconds in the Chicago Marathon. His record stood for two years. He holds a string of racing victories and was an NCAA All-American in the 10K distance at Boston University.

Jerry now is a manager with 1st Place Sports in Jacksonville. He shared some of his experiences as an elite runner, and talked about different types of running shoes for different types of feet and running strides. Here's a quick summary of the process 1st Place Sports uses to determine which type of shoe is best for each runner.

On Friday, we enjoyed an all-outdoors session in the shade at the FBHS bus loop. Coach Bill talked about a vaiety of running topics, including race strategy. Here's a recap.

Our camp may be over, but Amelia Island Runners is still here for you! We hold group runs every Wednesday from 6 to 7 p.m. (weather permitting) at the FBHS track, 435 Citrona Drive. You're invited! We're fortunate that two great coaches, Coach Bill and Coach Roy Benson, are AIR members and volunteer their time to work with runners at our group runs. Our track runs are free, fun and motivating, and open to everyone, so please come on over when you can!

Once again, congratulations to our Summer Camp "Class of 2010" and we look forward to seeing you on the roads and trails in the years to come!
